Bulky Goods Collection Begins at 5:30 AM – Bulky goods collection for large items such as couches, chairs, mattresses, appliances, etc. (All Buckhannon Waste Department customers are allowed 4 items per month and 8 tires per year.)   You must call by Wednesday, April 10, 2024, to schedule a pick-up.  Items must be at the curb by 5:30 a.m. on Friday to ensure pick-up.

Advisory:
The City of Buckhannon has been made aware of a traffic pattern change by the Upshur County Commission:
Route 20 will be reduced to single-lane traffic in the area of the Upshur County Courthouse on Monday, April 8th.

The Upshur County Commission has contracted with Reclaim Company, LLC, to demolish the 3-story structure at 18 South Locust Street on Monday, April 8th, beginning at approximately 8:00 AM and continuing until 4:00 PM.

For public safety, the northbound lane of South Locust Street will be closed during the demolition process. Flaggers will be in place to alternate traffic flow. Chancery Street and the Franklin Street intersection at South Locust Street will also be closed due to the demolition. An alternate route northbound is South Kanawha Street to West Main Street. VIPS and CERT volunteers will assist with traffic flow during the closure. Weather or other unforeseen conditions may cause schedule changes.

Please note: The Upshur County Commission oversees this project, while the WVDOH controls the main roadway affected (Route 20). The City of Buckhannon is sharing this notice with our community on behalf of our colleagues at the Upshur County Commission. – The Upshur County Solid Waste Authority is sponsoring a Free Paper Shredding Event (Residential Only) on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at 395 Mud Lick Rd. The Buckhannon Water Department Continues the Meade Street Project with Intermittent Street Closures -The Buckhannon City Water Department continues the work on Meade Street installing a new 6″ water line and fire hydrants, replacing the old 4” cast iron main currently in use.

Route 20 Traffic will be Single Lane at the Courthouse on Monday, April 8th

The City of Buckhannon Spring/Summertime do’s and don’ts for Residents – City Officials would like to remind residents to be thoughtful of visitors and their neighbors as we approach the summer season. Several issues appear each year that cause complaints to be filed with the City.  Here are the dos and don’ts for lawn care: 

#1 – Keep grass clippings out of the street – Leaving grass clippings in the street contributes to blocked storm drains and an increased threat of local flooding. When you or your yard service finishes mowing, excess grass MUST be collected and disposed of properly.

#2 – Lawn care needs to be done weekly – Proper yard maintenance enhances your neighborhood’s attractiveness. Failure to mow your lawn, having excess materials in your yard, or having an open porch filled with “stuff” often become eyesores for your neighbors. Please help make our City Shine for our visitors and your neighbors. As a regular subscriber to the City service for trash collection, you may call and arrange to have bulky goods and other unwanted items picked up by City crews for a reasonable fee.

#3 – Swimming Pools & Other Water Features – In the City of Buckhannon: “Private swimming pools containing water more than 24 inches in depth shall be permitted only when located in rear yards, and further when completely enclosed by a fence or buildings or combination thereof of a height of six feet (6’) in the case of fences, and six feet (6’) or greater in the case of buildings, and generally protected in such a manner to avoid becoming an attractive nuisance especially to children.”

Public Notice for Comment from the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department

BUCKHANNON, WV: At a meeting held on March 20, 2024, the Upshur-Buckhannon Board of Health voted to adopt a proposed rule, entitled “Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department Fees for Permits and Services”.  The proposed Rule establishes fees for environmental permits and services.  The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department is seeking approval of this newly proposed Rule by the Appointing Authorities of the Board of Health.  Citizens wishing to obtain a copy of the proposed Rule can do so by contacting the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department at 15 North Locust Street, Buckhannon, WV, or at 304-472-2810.  The proposed Rule is available for review at the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for legal holidays.  Comments must be received no later than the close of business, 4:30 p.m. on April 26, 2024.  All comments must be in writing to be considered by the Upshur-Buckhannon Board of Health.

B-UMS Theatre Club and the CAC Announce Upcoming Production
– The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School’s Theatre Club is excited to announce their next production, “All The Ways The World Will End… But Not You”, by Ian McWethy and Jason Pizzarello, which will take place at the Colonial Arts Center on Main Street in Buckhannon this coming weekend! Here are the dates and times that you can catch these incredible young artists:

The Buckhannon Water Department Announces Meade Street Project – Intermittent Street Closures to Take Place – The Buckhannon City Water Department is beginning an important project on Meade Street. The project involves installing a new 6″ water line and fire hydrants, replacing the old 4” cast iron main currently in use.

We anticipate no disruption to customer water service during this project. After Part 1 is completed, we will post a new notification for Part 2, which involves transferring all the customers’ water services to the new water main.

Due to this project, Intermittent street closures will occur, beginning on or around March 12, 2024, and continuing through the spring and summer months of 2024.  While we cannot announce specific dates for the temporary street closures, we can provide the order for the phases.

⦁ Phase 1 of the project will be from College Ave to Latham Street.

⦁ Phase 2 will be from Latham Street to Lightburn Street.

⦁ Phase 3 will be from Lightburn Street, including Madison Street, and continuing to South Florida Street.
