City Zoning Officer offers Updates and Reminders

February 19, 2021 BUCKHANNON, WV:
Building Code Enforcement Officer Vincent Smith appeared at the February 18, 2021 City Council meeting with a report that included an update from a recent Zoning Board of Appeals meeting; activity in demo and construction permit applications; Buckhannon Historic Landmarks Commission recommendations; and reminders to our citizens on adherence to various City ordinances.

During his presentation to Council, he provided recommendations from the Buckhannon Historic Landmarks Commission to install multiple turnstile signs downtown, each depicting Buckhannon’s historic information, and to create design criteria for historical areas that would offer property renovation and construction suggestions.  After much discussion, it was determined that Council would support the Buckhannon Historic Landmarks Commission recommendation to install historic information turnstiles signage downtown and to create language for potential design criteria concerning historic property renovations and construction.

Mr. Smith also spoke about the constant activity with permit applications and commended those who followed the process appropriately while reminding others that any additions to your property require obtaining the correct permit.  As the Building Code Enforcement Officer, he has been directed by the City to ensure that everyone is following our ordinances.  To be sure that you are complying, contact City Hall at 304-472-1651.

Reminders provided to our citizens included that it is the owner’s responsibility to keep the sidewalk in front of their property clear of snow; all toters (City waste containers) are to be removed from the sidewalks after the waste has been picked up; and, that it is a state law that you must remove all doors from refrigerators or food freezer appliances that are placed outside.
