Buckhannon Police Dept. Honors Police Chief Chesley Grover Mearns
BUCKHANNON, WV: The seventh annual Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day was held on May 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Complex in Buckhannon. During the ceremony, Buckhannon Police Chief Chesley Grover Mearns, who was shot in the line of duty on August 9, 1921 and died of the injury on August 13, 1921, was honored and memorialized on Buckhannon Police Department’s Blue Wall of Honor.
Mayor Robbie Skinner met with family members and presented them with an official proclamation commemorating the sacrifice of Chief Mearns.
Mike Wallace, Frank Bartlett American Legion Post # 7 Commander delivered remarks and the Upshur County Combined Honor Guard provided a tribute to Chief Mearns.
Buckhannon Police Chief Matthew Gregory presented the history of the Webb Grubb Police Recognition Day and also paid tribute to Chief Chesley Mearns’ life and service to the community.
