BUCKHANNON, WV: Congratulations to Steve Wykoff, an active member of Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) here in Buckhannon, who was recognized today for working alongside the Buckhannon Police Department to keep our community safe. Wykoff received a Jefferson Award this afternoon at the WDTV newsroom, presented by Antero Resources and the Jefferson Awards Foundation. The Jefferson Awards Foundation was established in 1972 by Jacqueline O’Nassis Kennedy, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard. The organization celebrates individuals with a strong commitment to volunteerism, public service, and their communities.
While Wykoff is originally from Pennsylvania, he has lived in Buckhannon since the late 1990’s and has been active with public preparedness initiatives, Upshur County CitizenCorps Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Upshur County EMS, as well as the VIPS program. Steve has two sons, C.J. and Spencer, and is engaged to Megan McKay. Steve shared that his “favorite part (of volunteering) is when I help someone and you can see the gratitude on their faces.” He particularly enjoys teaching kids about emergency services organizations and how they help the community, and that they are not something to be feared. Besides volunteering with VIPS, Steve also enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, hot air ballooning, and DJing for friends and family.
