Hurricane Ida Weather Event – City of Buckhannon Message

Good morning,

Per guidance from the Office of Emergency Management, the Upshur County Commission has declared a County-wide State of Emergency due to the impending flooding threat from Hurricane Ida.  This includes the City of Buckhannon, as the County seat of Upshur County.

The City of Buckhannon supports the measure taken by the Upshur County Commission.  Together, we urge all our citizens and business owners to make necessary preparations to protect their lives and property as the effects of Ida continue to threaten our region.

I encourage our citizens to refrain from traveling as much as possible until the heavy rains pass, and any high waters recede.  Please check on your elderly or disabled neighbors, and make certain pets are not in danger of rising waters.  If you have an emergency, call 911.  City and County first responders will assist you.  Walking and/or driving through high water not only endangers you, but also places our first responders at risk.  “TURN AROUND. DON’T DROWN!”  Local officials will work to reopen any flooded streets once conditions are deemed safe.

When the weather conditions improve, we will begin any necessary cleanup efforts.  The City of Buckhannon and the Upshur County Commission wish to thank our community for your cooperation during this severe weather event.
