Special Olympians make City of Buckhannon shine

Special Olympians make City of Buckhannon shine; volunteers clean up Jawbone Park and Stockert Youth & Community Center grounds

May 1, 2018

BUCKHANNON, WV: On an overcast Thursday afternoon, eleven Special Olympians and volunteers, parents, and chaperones spent the late afternoon hours collecting trash and debris from Jawbone Park and Stockert Youth & Community Center.

Despite the chilly weather, the volunteers collected three, thirty-gallon bags of trash and debris from the two areas as part of the statewide West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Make It Shine annual cleanup.

Anyone making use of Jawbone Park and the Stockert Youth & Community Center following the cleanup could definitely see that the Olympians’ efforts were not in vain.  They really did “Make It Shine”.

Afterward, all the volunteers enjoyed a pizza party at Stockert Youth & Community Center to honor the Olympians and thank them for all of their hard work.

Special thanks go out to Charliena Eubank, who helped organize the event, Little Caesar’s Pizza for providing the pizzas, Stockert Youth & Community Center for allowing the Olympians to make use of their cafeteria after the clean-up efforts, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for bags and cleanup supplies, and the City of Buckhannon Waste Department.

The City of Buckhannon is a proud recipient of the 2017 Cabinet Secretary’s Award for Environmental Stewardship and the 2017 Clean Community Award, both presented by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. The community thrives through the efforts of volunteers such as the Upshur County Special Olympians. Thank you for all you do to make Buckhannon and West Virginia shine!
