Virgil Miller Honored at Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day

BUCKHANNON, WV:  The City of Buckhannon and the Buckhannon Police Department celebrated the 8th annual Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day by posthumously honoring former Buckhannon Police Chief and Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller.

Virgil Miller served as the Chief of Police for the Buckhannon Police Department from 2001 to 2004. Among his many other contributions to law enforcement, he served five terms as the Sheriff of Upshur County. (1989 – 1996, first and second Terms; 2005 – 2012, third and fourth terms; 2021 – “End Of Watch” in 2023, fifth term.)

Among attendees were Chief Miller’s family members, active and former serving police officers, who paid tribute to Virgil Miller’s commitment to law enforcement and the communities he served.

The City also added Chief Virgil Miller to its “Wall of Blue, which already honors Officer Grubb, Lieutenant Rowan, Chief Gaudet, Lieutenant Bennett, Sheriff Coffman, Buddy Ray Zickefoose, and Chief Mearns.

About Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day: Since 2017, the City of Buckhannon has paid tribute to all police officers each Wednesday of the annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival. The City first honored Wilbert H. “Webb” Grubb, for whom this day of recognition is named. In 2018, the City honored Lieutenant Keith Rowan, Chief Fred Gaudet in 2019, Lieutenant Darrell Bennett in 2021, former Upshur County Sheriff David Coffman in 2022, former police officer Buddy Ray Zickefoose in 2023, Chief Chesley Mearns in 2024, and former Chief and Sheriff Virgil Miller in 2025.
