Current term: 2026 – 2030
Shawn Young was elected to the Buckhannon City Council in May 2026 and was sworn into office on May 21, 2026, following certification of the municipal election results. A lifelong Upshur Countian, Young grew up in French Creek and now resides in Buckhannon with his wife, Cari, a hospice nurse and current WVWC nurse practitioner student. The couple is expecting their first child in July.
Young is a 2013 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, where he lettered in football and track and was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by his classmates. He went on to build a respected career in electrical construction, rising from apprentice to supervisory roles. He currently serves as President of IBEW Local 596, representing approximately 400 electrical workers, and as Secretary of the WV AFL-CIO North Central Labor Council.
In addition to his professional leadership, Young has been active in community service. His volunteer work includes coaching youth football in Buckhannon, coordinating Toys for Tots gift distribution, running SkillsUSA Electrical Construction state competitions, and regularly donating blood.
Outside of work and service, Young enjoys watching football and baseball, spending time with family and friends, and marathon training along the Buckhannon Riverwalk. He looks forward to contributing to Buckhannon’s continued progress and working collaboratively with fellow Council members and community partners.
