Mayor’s Fitness Challenge nets thousands in donations for Stockert Youth & Community Center

BUCKHANNON, WV: On June 29, David McCauley, Mayor of Buckhannon, celebrated his 60th birthday! The date also marked the conclusion of the fitness challenge to lose weight, get healthy, and raise funds for Stockert Youth & Community Center (SYCC). Mike Cozad of Dominion Resources joined the mayor for the final weigh-in that Friday morning at Buckhannon City Hall. Drum roll, please….Cozad edged McCauley by two pounds! Combined, the pledges they secured for SYCC totaled more than $4,000, making the community the real winner.
While Mayor McCauley lost an admiral twenty pounds, Mr. Cozad stepped on the scale and registered a drop of twenty-two pounds since the initial weigh-in on February 16, 2018. Both individuals contacted friends and family and urged them to pledge a dollar amount for each pound lost. Dozens of community supporters, co-workers, and family members stepped up and together raised thousands of dollars for the proposed facility expansion at SYCC.
For nearly three decades now, Stockert Youth & Community Center has provided tutoring, after-school activities, recreation and sports classes & leagues, and summer camps for youth and adults in Buckhannon and Upshur County. The City thanks Mr. Cozad and all the fitness challenge participants, as well as the donors who worked together to make the fitness challenge fundraiser a success. We appreciate all of our community partners who have shown support for Stockert Youth and Community Center, past, present, and future.
