City of Buckhannon Reminder of Yard Waste & Leaf Collection Procedures
BUCKHANNON, WV — The City of Buckhannon has issued its ongoing procedures for yard waste and loose leaf collection. Please review the guidelines below to ensure materials are prepared properly and placed for pickup on the correct dates, noting some special dates due to large events and holidays.
Yard Waste Collection — December 1 through August 31
Pickup occurs on the first and third Friday of each month, except in 2026, the Friday, May 15th pick up is rescheduled to Friday, May 22 (due to the WV Strawberry Festival), the June 19th pick up is rescheduled to Friday, June 26th (due to WV Day holiday), the July 3rd pick up is rescheduled to July 10th (due to the Independence Day holiday), and August 7th pick up is reschedule to August 14th (due to the WV Largest Yard Sale).
- Accepted Materials include grass, leaves, hedge trimmings, and sticks.
- Bagging Requirements: Grass, leaves, and trimmings must be placed in biodegradable bags or lidded containers weighing less than 35 lbs.
- Stick Requirements: Sticks must be under 1 inch in diameter, under 4 feet in length, and tied in bundles weighing less than 35 lbs.
- Large Brush Fees: Larger branches or shrubbery may be collected for a fee of $25 per small dump truck load.
- Scheduling Pickup: Requests must be made before noon on Thursday for Friday pickup.
- How to Request: Call City Hall at 304‑472‑1651. Residents may also request placement on the bi‑weekly pickup list, renewed each March.

- Notification Required: Loose leaf collection is conducted by request only. Residents must call before noon on Thursday for Friday pickup.
- How to Request: Call City Hall at 304‑472‑1651 to schedule service.
- Curb Placement: Leaves and grass must be raked into a windrow at the curb.
- Loose Only: Leaves must be loose—no bags or containers.
- Vehicle Clearance: Parked vehicles must not block access; the leaf vacuum can reach up to 6 feet from the street.
